6th. Saw my Father in Mr. Shepherds canoe coming at about 11 a.m. from Guiana Key, we had breakfast
together and then departed with all our things as Mr.S. was kind enough to offer my Father a house to
live in. After paddling 12 or 14 miles all the time gunnelOn a canoe, the gunwale or gunnel is typically the widened edge at the top
of the side of the boat, under, we arrived at Mr.S's who received us
very kindly and had horses provided for us, but my Father prefered walking; our things were sent round
in the canoe and taken up the hill, where we were to reside, it is a large thatched cottage, with one
room, about 300 yards above Mr.S's and his house is nearly as high from the seas my Father liked it very
much, and he said he should now have quiet and tranquility; we returned down the hill to dinner, where
we were introduced to all his family and friends, his daughter and sons are all coloured, but the
schoolmaster etc.etc. are white, we had a most excellent dinner, turtle, currasoes etc. some wharree;
remembered my Mother and Mr.S and all drank her health; than went to arrange our things up hill. Mr.S
sent everything that was necessary: turned in at 8, twas very strange to me to sleep with the windows
all open around us, my Father always does so, but he has often been obliged to get out of bed and let
the shutter or blinds down, as the rain blew on him: bit again by mosquitoes and sand flies.
7th.April Mr S. blew a horn for us to come to breakfast, which we did, took a walk about the Island
the population of which is supposed to be 60 or 70, all of whom Mr S. has to keep and feed, returned to
dinner, took a tinder box up; playd a game at cards with my Father and went to bed.
8th. Descended as usual to breakfast and my Father proposed making a map of Central America for Mr S.
so that he was busy.
9th. Our house is surrounded by thousands of Maccows, Parrots, humming birds, Pigeons etc.
10th. Sunday Went and had a cruize about the Lagoon with Mr.S. in his canoe, which is a very fine one,
capacious enough to hold 16 people and carries 3 sails.
